Mathematics (White Rose Maths)

Mathematics is a vital part of our curriculum, equipping pupils with the skills they need to reason, solve problems and make sense of the world around them. We aim for all pupils to develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards maths, understanding that everyone can succeed in mathematics.

Maths is taught using the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced, coherent curriculum from the Early Years through to Key Stage 2. Learning is built progressively, ensuring pupils develop a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts, including number, calculation, geometry, measure and statistics.

Lessons follow a small steps approach, allowing pupils to explore concepts in depth before moving on. Teaching emphasises:

  • Fluency, so pupils can recall and apply key facts efficiently
  • Reasoning, enabling pupils to explain their thinking using precise mathematical language
  • Problem solving, encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge in a range of contexts

In the Early Years, maths learning is grounded in practical experiences, developing early number sense, counting, comparison, pattern and shape. As pupils progress through KS1 and KS2, learning builds cumulatively, with regular opportunities to revisit and consolidate prior knowledge.

We work closely with parents and carers to support maths learning at home. Helpful videos and guidance linked to White Rose Maths can be found here:

Through high-quality teaching and a clear progression of skills, pupils are supported to become confident, capable mathematicians who can apply their learning both within school and in everyday life.
