MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM STATEMENT

Intent

Mathematics is important in everyday life and with this in mind the purpose of Mathematics at Hutchinson Memorial First School is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. All children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths and as a school we strive for every child to become resilient, adaptable learners. To help children to achieve this we focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving within maths. New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, which allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and basic maths skills are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.

Implementation

Maths at Hutchinson Memorial First School:

  • We teach Maths as a discrete subject following the National Curriculum programmes of study but where possible, links are made with other areas of the curriculum.
  • We follow the White Rose schemes of learning, which aids us in delivering the Maths Mastery approach.
  • Our Maths Curriculum is organised into blocks. These blocks are broken down into small, achievable steps. Our aim is that all children can access these steps.
  • Wherever possible lessons use a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.

Concrete – all children have opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing, e.g., base 10, counters, place value counters.

Pictorial – children then build on this concrete approach by using pictorial representations, which can then be used to reason and solve problems.

Abstract – children move to an abstract approach using numbers and key concepts with confidence.

  • To support our delivery of Maths we also use NCETM and NRICH.
  • Basic Maths skills are practised daily, focussing on key mathematical skills including place value, the four operations and fractions.
  • A range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding.
  • Children are taught through targeted intervention groups and mixed ability whole class lessons.
  • Revise and Review consolidation activities and lessons are used to revisit previous learning and ensure Maths skills are embedded.
  • APP’s – TT Rockstars and Numbots.
  • Homework is set to develop and review children’s learning.
  • We use White Rose Maths assessments to support our teacher assessment judgements and discussions in termly Pupil Progress Meetings.

As a result of our Maths teaching at Hutchinson Memorial First School you will see:

  • The teaching of Maths is monitored by leaders through book scrutinises and lesson observations.

‘Over time, pupils have reached well-above average standards in reading, writing and mathematics in the end of KS1 assessments.  Pupils have then gone on to achieve even greater heights in Years 3 and 4.  Academic standards are high in every year group’.   OFSTED 2016
